Dinner with the McLaughlins

Standard

This week we had the chance to meet up with James and Cynthia (our friends from the NICU). All day Megan was so excited and kept talking about Rachel (their two year old). She also would mention the “Ronald McDonald House” and “102” (our room there). I knew that she thought that’s where we were going to see Rachel, and although I tried to tell her otherwise, she just kept talking about it. Well, our plan was to meet them in Des Moines for dinner at PF Changs. On the way there, Megan fell asleep. And when she woke up to daddy carrying her into a restaurant…she was NOT happy. For several reasons. I think mostly she felt betrayed: there was Rachel, but we were not at the RMH. Also, if Megan is not hungry (which is almost always) then she CANNOT STAND to be around food. Anyway, for almost an HOUR she cried and whined and set mommy into a level of frustration that I have never felt with her. What an awesome time for Megan to throw her first public tantrum! Then, as if someone flipped a switch, she was as happy as could be. She exclaimed: “HI RACHEL!” as if we had only just arrived and was her silly happy self. After dinner we went to a little play place and the girls had a blast.

James and Cynthia were more understanding about Megan’s meltdown than they should have been, and we all ended up having a pretty good time. It was just nice to see them, and we were also able to talk about our boys a little bit, which is ALWAYS nice. I can’t imagine what an enjoyable evening it would have been if Megan would have left the monster at home, so I am REALLY looking forward to the next time we get together.
